Teak plantations older than 50 years or old natural forests do not have the same wood characteristics as young plantations in Latin America (20-25 years). The quality and especially the diameter dimensions are different. Besides, the market of mature teak is well regulated. On the other hand Latin America will supply an important part of the teak market, but is not properly geared to marketing short rotation material. This will change in the coming years, with the knowledge that producers are not getting the best price, ‘the market being controlled by buyers’. The key questions is: How get the right price for short rotation teak for the producers?
